Why Trump Is Not, And Can Never Be, A Real Christian
While I recently joked that he's a perfect example of an evangelical, by the actual rules, he's not even "born again"
As stated in the subtitle, I recently made a joke about how Trump is a perfect, dictionary definition of an evangelical Christian hypocrite, and in some ways, I’ll stand by that, at least as long as we include “evangelical” and “hypocrite”.
But if you drop those two words, and don’t consider it a joke, you will be forced to come to the conclusion that he’s not a Christian at all. And, in fact, he can never even be a christian.
Allow me to pontificate:
Way back in 2015 or 2016, Trump did an interview with Anderson Cooper, in which, Cooper asked him point blank if he had ever confessed his sins and asked for Jesus forgiveness. Trump’s answer was prototypical Trump. He said that he didn’t feel he had anything to confess, and therefore, no need to ask for forgiveness.
Now, I will not belabor the point about whether Donald Trump has ever sinned. I think we can all agree that’s a damned lie. But it hardly matters when it comes to the tenets of Christianity. One of the most important of all the rules of that religion states (and I quote directly from their own Operator’s Manual) “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” It is one of the most basic tenets that we all, each and every one of us, no matter how perfect a life we might lead, carry “original sin” inherited from Adam. You and I both are guilty of the same sin as he, we have eaten the fruit, or at least, we bear the “stain” of having eaten it.
One cannot, and I stress, cannot be “born again” unless and until we confess our sins and ask Jesus to forgive us. Even if we ourselves have never so much as told a fib, or taken a cookie we were not allowed to have, even if we are as pure as the driven snow, we still must confess to Adam’s sin and ask to be forgiven for it. There are no ifs, ands, or buts in there. No clauses that let someone off the hook. You confess and ask forgiveness, or you burn.
If Trump never sinned a day in his life, which is, (as anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows) a lie and also another sin, still if he had never sinned, he still must confess and ask forgiveness. There’s no other option.
But it gets even worse than that…
Donnie Tiny Hands also told Cooper that “when I go into church, and I take Communion, when I have my little cracker and my little glass of wine (and I don’t even drink wine) then I feel forgiven”.
But that’s a whole new problem.
There is one sin listed in the Big Book Of Whatever The Hell You Want It To Mean that is called “unforgivable”. That is the sin of “Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit”.
Not murder, not rape, not torture, not enslaving someone, not even homosexuality. Nope, even the “gays” can be forgiven. But if you blaspheme the Holy Spirit, you go to hell and there’s no “confess and ask Jesus to forgive you” get out of hell free card for that one.
But what, exactly is “Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit”?, you might well arsk… well, at least some sects of Christianity consider taking Holy Communion when you have not been “saved” to qualify as just that sort of Blasphemy.
So, if Donald John Trump is taking Holy Communion, and he’s never confessed his sins and asked for Jesus’ forgiveness… he’s committing the one and only unforgivable sin. He’s damned to spend eternity in hell, and it’s too late for him to even rectify that mistake… ie: he’s toast.
Not only is he a profligate liar, not only is he a con man extraordinaire, not only is a rapist, a racist, a thief (and quite possibly) a killer… he’s also a blasphemer of the worst kind.
So, yes, under the rules of the religion, he isn’t a Christian at all… but under the rules of the evangelicals, he’s literally perfect. He’s everything they want to be.
As i’ve stated before on Substack, Jesus was brown, he was Jewish, he was an asylum seeker. If he were here now, tRump would be dog whistling for maga to do him harm.
